Movie Night - Friendship
Friendship (7/10) - DeYoung's feature debut as writer/director, who has solid episodes of Dave, A.P. Bio and PEN15 under his belt, had some hits and misses but overall it was an impressive introduction.
The sound and cinematography starred with a great score flowing easily throughout but the story hit too many roadblocks and felt like one long ITYSL bit that was sloppily held together.
I’m a Tim Robinson Stan and I understand his style isn’t for everyone but his timing and facial expressions always bring a smile to my face. There were some great laugh out loud moments but ultimately the movie lacked direction and cohesion.
The ending somehow landed with a great final shot (clearly DeYoung is a fan of Cable Guy). Fits perfect but not a movie I’ll fight to hang out with again
Movie Night - Sinners
Sinners (8/10) – I love a good sale and a BOGO Michael B. Jordan is a no-brainer. Coogler and Jordan have come a long way since first teaming up in Fruitvale Station, one of the better movies of 2013, and they flex their growth here with style. The film hums along at a poetic pace that emulates Jordan’s southern drawl, and the score and cinematography hit all the right notes. Sure, the genre lines get blurred and not every choice lands, but you can feel the vision bleeding through every frame. An easy nominee for top ten movies of 2025.
